- April 1—Diocletian elevates Maximian to Augustus, or senior emperor.
- Carausius, commander of the Classis Britannica, is accused of piracy and sentenced to death. He responds by declaring himself emperor. Britain and Northwestern Gaul recognize his claim to the office.
- To distribute the task of defending and administering the empire and to assure an orderly succession, Diocletian divides the empire in two.
